Welcome — your binder is ready to build

You have two files in your download: the Personal Finance Binder (a fillable PDF) and the User Guide. This page walks you through setting the binder up — whether you want to use it on a screen, on paper, or both. You can reprint or re-download your pages whenever you need a fresh start.

Choose how you want to use it

Digitally: the binder is a fillable PDF, so you can type straight into it. Open it in a free PDF reader (Adobe Acrobat Reader on a computer, or a PDF annotation app on a tablet), fill in your numbers, and save. Tablet users with a stylus can also handwrite on the pages. Save a blank master copy first so you can start a new month or a new year anytime.

On paper: print the sections you use and keep them in a binder on your desk or kitchen counter. Many people do both — plan on paper, keep the totals digitally.

What to gather for a printed binder

  • A 1½″ or 2″ three-ring binder — room to grow as the months add up
  • A set of divider tabs (5–8 tabs)
  • A three-hole punch, or sheet protectors if you’d rather slide pages in
  • Optional: a pencil pouch for receipts, and a zip pouch if you use cash envelopes

Set up your sections

Use one divider tab per section, in the order you’ll reach for them:

  1. Budget — your monthly budget pages and annual overview up front. This is the section you’ll open most.
  2. Bills & Expenses — bill tracker and spending logs, so due dates never sneak up on you.
  3. Debt — your debt worksheets and payoff trackers. Fill in every balance honestly on day one; the numbers only get better from there.
  4. Savings — savings trackers and sinking funds for the goals you’re building toward.
  5. Goals — your financial goal pages. Review them when you do your monthly money check-in.
  6. Accounts & Reference — account lists and anything you need to find fast.

Printing tips

  • Print one-sided so pages lie flat while you write.
  • Standard letter paper is fine; a 24 lb paper feels sturdier if you’ll handle pages often.
  • Only print the current month — reprint fresh pages from your saved master each month instead of printing a year at once.
  • In your printer dialog, choose “Fit to printable area” so nothing gets clipped.

Make it stick: the 20-minute money check-in

A binder only works if it gets opened. Pick one recurring time — many of our customers like the first Sunday of the month — and spend 20 minutes updating balances, checking the budget against what actually happened, and moving your trackers forward. Small, regular, honest check-ins beat marathon sessions every time.
